Wireless network issue

I'm trying to set up a wireless network for the first time - so the wife can use her laptop anywhere in the house. I'm using a 802.11G WAP connected to my linksys router, and a 802.11B PCMCIA card in the laptop. I had no problem getting it set up, but it won't hold a connection.

I'm sitting here at 85% or 90% signal strength, and every minute or so it just instantly loses the link. After about 10 seconds, the link instantly comes back on at 90% again.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?? Does this sound like defective parts, or maybe just some kind of interference from telephones, etc?? (I don't have any 2.4 ghz devices, but my neighbors do)

Oh yeah, it seems to be most prone to losing the connection when you are transmitting data (like as soon as I hit the "submit" button to post this message)

Yes - Win XP Home Edition. Also - WAP is a Netgear WG602, and the PCMCIA card is Trendware TEW-226PC

Well, I disabled the MS wireless configuration service, & I'm configuring through the software that came with the wirless card.

I also made sure that 802.1x authentication is not active.

Still have the same problem.

The problem happens whether or not WEP or MAC address filtering is enabled.

Any other ideas??

Is there any way to determine whether its the network card or the WAP thats dropping the connection??

how far are you from the access point?

mac address filtering and wep wont interefere with it. Do you have a 2.4ghz phone in the house?

do you have the acess point antennas sticking straight up? do you have it near other electronics?

have you tried changing the channel you are using to connect?

how far are you from the access point? Doesn't seem to matter

mac address filtering and wep wont interefere with it. Do you have a 2.4ghz phone in the house? No

do you have the acess point antennas sticking straight up? Yes do you have it near other electronics? Its near my desktop computer - but I would think that is typical

have you tried changing the channel you are using to connect? Not yet - I didn't see any way to change channels - I'll have to look again

you should be able to change the channel by logging into the access point web interface

do you have the latest firmware installed? is your wireless card seeing other wireless networks by chance?

OK - I changed channels - but still have the same problem.

No - the wireless card can only see my WAP - nothing else.

Strange - when I just try to surf the web, I continuously lose & regain the connection.

So I tried streaming some mp3's from my other computer & it works perfectly. I can also surf the web at the same time as I'm streaming mp3's & have no problem.

Seems like the only time there's a problem is when you are sending/receiving data intermittently. As long as you keep a continuous data stream going, the connection holds.

Any other ideas??
