It depends on your motherboard. It's a slot 1 so you can get a 1 GHz cpu if your motherboard will support. You probably will need to update the bios to get a 1 GHz cpu to work. I looked at your specs and it says the cpu is upgradable but it doesn't say to what.
A 1 GHz slot 1 cpu with heatsink and fan cost $397. You can get a P4 2.6 for about $175. Next week the price of a P4 2.8 is supposed to drop to P4 2.6 prices. I think you would be better off getting a new pc.

You have a choice of a faster slot 1 cpu or getting a convertor [slocket] that utilizes a socket 370 and getting a socket 370 cpu. See if you can determine the maximum multiplier setting on your board or in the bios and post back with it.

You have a slot one motherboard. Search ebay for a slot 1 pentium 3, for about 130 bucks (think jarhed is smoking something), you can get a pretty fast pentium III 1.2 Ghz+. That'll whip ya thru anything that you need to do

Also, the 370 socket, dosent give you a choice of a faster processor. Stick with the slot one, and get yourself a Pentium 3

compaq usually dosen't let their boards support much more than it comes with

that cpu also seams to be some other brand...C3 mabey but i couldnt tell you...it would be better to stick with a 1ghz p3 or a 1.4 celeron on a slocket adapter...but thats only if your motherboard will support it...the link says no upgrade options for cpu but that may be because compaq dosent want you to...even then i would susspect that it would only support the pII or mabey smaller pIIIs but nothing that big
