java mysteriously gone and wont come back

Thsi is for a friend so I dont have all the error messages in their entirety...
When restarting xp home, she gets an error message along the lines of "you need the latest Java Moxie environment" and when you click ok it takes you to the java homepage and when attempting to download the operation stops at 2/3 of the way through the "copying files" and throws up a cant find file error. Everytime (3+)
Any ideas?
Doesnt really seem to affect anything that she does except she was unable to bid on a horse auction because of the lack of java.

Tried completely uninstalling Java prior to attempting to dl it?
