Systems that old dial up

a question for those who are wise.

A few weeks ago my modem stopped making the dial up noise. ?!?!

it dials up silently now, wich is annoying. And never connects at higher than 42.2kbps while it used to connect at 46.6kbps.

Any ideas? its doing my head in!

connection speeds is totally dependent on line conditions. this time of year is hard on lines, and problems are more likely to accour.

I'm not sure there's much of a difference between 42.2 and 46.6 kbps. Frankly, on my work remote dial-up, I'd be thrilled with 42.2. I typically get 26.4.
