first check your power settings in the BIOS (usually the way to access the bios setup is to hit esc, del or one of the function keys....your boot screen during power on should say). then check your power settings (under control panel)...

read my post. unless you have some sort of physical hardware problem (which is forcing the laptop to turn off on its own), it is either a power setting in the bios or the os.

I'm not computer literate.....

I don't know much about computers and I feel so stupid for asking this but if I am to fix this problem then I must know all the details. What is BIOS and OS? Don't laugh at me........

don't worry...i never laugh at people because they don't know the answer.

OK...before you check the bios, let's first check your power settings in XP.

right click on your desktop and select Properties. Click on the Screen Saver tab and click on the Power button. Examine your settings nder the Power Schemes tab.

also what model laptop is this...it may help w/the bios stuff.

Send a message via AIM to Gettinbye
P.S.- BIOS is an acronym for Basic Integrated Operating System...it's what's needed in order for your O/S (operating system) to load and run.
Glad to see you expanding your horizons. And, by the way, Welcome to TechIMO

Thanks, Well for the power scheme it is set at portable/laptop and for the settings for turn off monitor it's...never and for the turn off hard disc it's ...never also. Are those the right settings? Well I baught this laptop used from some guy who said he got it from when he was in the military and it's quite old there is no name of a company like dell, apple or toshiba. All it says is hyperbook.....it just shut down again......
