LCD for DV?

Are LCD monitors acceptable for a good digital video editing system?

As a graphic designer, I'm aware of the problems with LCD as far as color accuracy is concerned... But would this also be a problem for someone doing video editing?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks.
Brandon

For almost all people I would say yes. An LCD is "good enough" for video editing. But you do have to spend some money to get a good one. The problem is, it will all come down to the users opinion and you pretty much have to research, test and figure that out for yourself.

Brandon, I have been weighing that for myself as well. I was terribly excited when I was reading 5/5 for colors on the Samsung 172X, but when it died it motion I was dissapointed. I finally thought there was one that would be my screen, but no.

I scouted around Tom's, LCD's seem to be aimed at either Office work or gaming, and they excel at either one, not both. I'm waiting for the one with excellent color and a fast response time.

Until then I will lose my eyesight staring at my blurry Sony G420S. (I really should take it in for warranty)

LCDs are perfectly acceptable, but as you said, they are not as color accurate as CRT's. I would slap the money down on a high end 21' trinitron, you can get refurbs from azatek and merkortek way cheap. They both sell LCDs too.

I was saying that particularly of the 172X. I was hoping it would be the breakout model. But it wasn't what I was expecting.

The 17" monitors usually are ahead technologically of the 19's for whatever reason.

I've sold a few 191T's They are MASSIVE and very sleek, clean screens. But they aren't as bright as I would like, nor are the colors the greatest, but they are nice screens that's for sure. Visibility range is incredible. I'm not sure how much they have improved since a year ago but I'm not sure if I would use one for full motion video editing. Sigh. I want LCD's but I do video so I need a good response rate, as well as graphic design, so I need good colors, and visibilty range for when I'm showing it to clients. I can't find one that has the combination of the 3. Sigh.

If anybody finds one, lmk.

Oh as far as colors for video, you can get away with it if you are using a production monitor.... (aka an external monitor/tv) to check colors, because usually the final product won't be on a computer screen anyways.
