My first case mod

Hey all,

Im very new to the PC modding and rather worried about doing it wrong! But I had a problem, and need a solution!

My PC case has USB ports on the TOP of the case, useless for me personally as it is under my desk and hard to reach.

The mobo I have, had it's own solution, but it was very ugly and took a whole 5inch bay up. (DFI lanparty's Front X system)

I wanted the space in the 5inch bay, but also the Front USB. So I did my first case mod - all be it very simple.

But the end result is simple and most of all neat, using the space of a floppy bay, which holds my HD in.

Id like to say all your mods on this forum are great, well beyond me at this stage.

What I did.

1. removed the USB from the FRONT X facia.
2. took a spare 3inch bay Facia.
3. measured the screw holes, and USB holes to make it central on the plastic Facia.
4. drilled screw holes and cut the square holes for the USB ports.
5. Filed and finished the cuts - as best i could.
6. attached the USB from the FRONT X system.

What do people think?

cool! I like it.
Congratulations on your first PC mod.
Some of mine have turned out good, some of them bad.

I was thinking about painting one of my cases, but I need to work up some motivation to do it... heh

Thanks for the support

My case is all 1mm jap steel, with the front, door being Aluminium.

Best to look at the thermaltake website, I have the Xaser III case - in blue

The facia's to the bays however are all in plastic.

a nice and practical mod...but i just have 1 tip for you which is not really related but you say tat your harddrive is in that bay...try moving it down it could get really hot with the floppy restricting the airflow over the top

I remember the mods I did to my first case...
1. Drilled a hole in the side panel and mounted a fan.
2. Drilled a hole in the top panel and mounted a fan.
3. Added Dynamat to quiet the case from all the fans.
4. Drilled holes in front of the case to bring in air flow.
5. Bought a new case

LOL, I messed up my first one so bad I just bought a new one after a while.

Nice, clean modding...good job!

Post count + 1

Just messin', bwahahaha...

I was always too afraid to mess with my case...but then again I have one of those "plain Jane" cases, nothing cool like your Thermaltake.

The HD that is there is an old 40gig drive, all it holds is data files, downloads and anything that I want to back up. But the real reason that it is in the floppy drive is for looks!

let me explain. the case can hold 6 drives in the main HD bay. of which my main HD is stored. However with the huge data cables running around the case it makes it look horrible.

Lame I know, but what ever floats your boat I guess. When i put it in there I was a little worried about it. But it seems to be OK, had it there for a few weeks now.

Thanks for the comments.

As regards to changing the colour, how do you vynl something? Match colours etc? is it hard to do. As someone like me, vain as it is, likes a good looking machine. Would like to know how that is done.

As for the HD thing see pic, explains it alot better! lol

Thanks for all the great feedback and tips
