Systems My Final Linux Conclusions~

ALOHA
First this is only My experience So No offense to Any Linux Gurus.

This is the second weekend I have tried to setup a Linux Os.
I have tried the Following:

Redhat 7.1~Not
RedHat 6.2~Almost
SuSe 6.4~Teaser
Mandrake 8.1~NOT
Caldera 2.2~2nd Runner up

ALL have Failed Miserably at different stages of SetUp!
Some never got past the initial setup screens!
Some actually managed to install and ALMOST ran off the HD.

But ALL Failed to even 1 time survive a boot off the HD and Run at least Once!!!!!!!!

I am Very dissappointed and Very Discouraged!

The "Kernal Panic" message is amusing though~Must be Linux for Blue Screen of Death?

Some of my Error Messages:
VFS:Unable to mount Root fs on 03:08
Sat Jan 12 18:41:20 /etc/localtime 2002 debugo_Info_install glibc not found
Attempted to Kill the idle Task
In Swapper task-Not syncing

Different errors at different times and of course my Personel fav=The Total lockUp!

After all this time in use I am Amazed that Linux is still this Fussy!
I guess you just have to have the Right hardware by Luck or by Planning.
While I would like to have a Linux machine,I have other things to invest in
than special hardware for Linux.

Maybe someday it will be as compatable as Windows.I have to laugh at the people who complain about windows
not always being compatable! They have No idea how lucky they are that windows is Here!!!

From Dos to Xp I've never had this much trouble setting up an Os.
I even had Beos running in the past!SetUp was a snap although I would have to track down nic drivers but it still ran and looked Good!

Someday I will run linux~For now though the time investment Just isnt worth it for me!

Aloha~A Devoted Win2k Fan

Out of curiosity what are your hardware specs?

Myself really the only thing I've had issues with (in the past, not so with recent versions) is my modem.

PIII-650
256MB Micron PC100 SDRAM
Nvidia GeForce2 MX 400 64MB Vidcard
SB Live! Value
Abit BE6II mobo
WD 20GB ATA66 HD
Old POS Quantum REALLLLLLY BIG(andslow)foot 4GB drive

teac 40x cdrom
USR ISA 56k Internal modem

all with no probs for me....

Mandrake 8.1/8.0 both worked like a dream

A few of those distro versions are too old for your hardware. The ATI vid card has several chipset versions and they're not all supported by Linux( look at this ).I know this 1st hand because I have a comp running Linux with this card and it works great and I had another comp with the same card(diff. chipset ver)that would not run X for anything.
If you have a 2 hdd system then there are also bootloader issues to contend with.
I'm almost sure this is a minor hardware problem that can be worked out.
What is your current working OS? Win2K,XP?

ALOHA
Surprisingly the older RH6.2 was the BEST setup I had.
It even had a video card called ATI Rage128(Generic) but it only showed a 16MB option not the32MB wcard.
RH 7.1 wouldn't give me more than 2-3 setup screen before it said NO!

Currently running Win2k and XpPro but with removable HDs not dual booting anything.
Linux to is setup on its own HD and for its initial setup I was by itself-no other HD present to prevent errors.

Intersting article!I thought it was probably some hardware incompatability.
If I were rich I could buy and setup a "Proper" Linux Sys.Prices are dropping fast these days and when I can I would like a 62Mb
DDR card and will try other than ATI.

I bookmarked the article but think I have the chipset that wouldn't run anything!

Thanks~BobViper

If your HDD is on your Highpoint controller then it can be difficult to install Linux as it is not suppoted with out drivers and will require a custom compiled kernel. If you move the HDD to the via controllers then it should work fine

i am really thinking that linux picks who it likes....

your hardware should be fine, i co-worker has alomst the same setup except a different NIC, vid card and sound card and he is using redhat 7.0

If you want to try again let us know, we can send you disks of the latest distros, and provide some pretty good help.

Maybe you'll find comfort in the fact that you're not alone with your Linux problems...

I don't, but maybe you will.
