Don't feel bad Bob --
I'm trying to install SmoothWall on my future server machine and I can't get past the first part of the set-up that identifies drivers for the NIC card. I finally gave up at 0530 and went to bed.
It looks like I'm going to have to learn how to compile the drivers for the NIC card just to complete setup and with what you've described with other hardware, I just might say forget it! (I just don't have time right now to get that deep! Sad thing is, it's just a plain little Linksys LNE100TX NIC!
If you Linux guru's can give me a little assistance so I can get it up and running in the next week, I'll continue. Otherwise, I'm going to do something else for my server.

| Thanks for the reminder, I just installed a new V92 modem and with the NIC card stopping me in set-up, I'm starting to believe I'm in the same "Linux doesn't like me" boat!

hi all,
i hate to this - but try another board if we can't help you - like www.linuxjunior.org, www.linuxquestions.org, or if you must linuxnewbie (an rotton internet.com site).
there are people at those sites who have forgoten more about linux than i will ever know. There are some great linux users here but believe me - there are other sites where there are dozens of crack linux commandos ready to help.
paul
EDIT: thanks for letting me know MIke !

I had similar problems setting Linux up with an ATI vid card, they seem to be pretty picky. I finally got things to install using an Nvidia card, but I didn't have enough time to figure out how to use the Linux OS, so I eventually just gave it up. |

I've said it before, and I'll say it again ................

USE CURRENT DISTROS
For heaven's sake REDHAT 6.2??? SuSE 6.4???
Seriously
Most issues you will experience with an old copy of Linux are fixed in future versions...
I know that SuSE 6.4 will NOT easily work with my modem.. But SuSE 7.2, Mandrake 8.1 and RedHat 7.2 DO!!!

Actually at least a few of us have had better luck with older versions. I at least got some response out of Redhat 5.2, and very very little out of Mandrake 8.1.

I agree with Cody
Newer distro's are far more user friendly for people new to *nix style OS's.
I can't really see any reason to use an old distro, as newer versions have less bugs & security problems fixed.
If you want a version of linux that is compiled for older hardware then use Slack 8 or debian potatoe, not an out dated version of a different distro.
Just my 2 c's
Regards
Eddy
