Systems A7V8X-X Strange Behaviour

Hi all

For about 4 months I have had a strange problem with my A7V8X-X. On random occasions upon pressing the power switch it makes noise (ie. fans etc) except no POST beeb. The monitor sits there with a no signal warning and nothing happens!

Here's my system spec:

Athlon XP2200+ (Retail fan/heatsink)
Asus A7V8X-X
Q-Tec 500W PSU
Crucial 512MB PC2700 DDR Ram
Maxtor 120GB 7200RPM ATA133 Hard Drive
Sapphire Radeon 9100 128MB Graphics
On-Board LAN
Soundblaster Live Player 5.1 Sound
LG DVD/CDRW
Samsung CDROM
Windows XP Pro SP1

Upon reseting the machine I am presented with the BIOS screen telling me that I have overclocked my CPU (which I haven't done, honest!). All the settings are fine, for my processor (1800Mhz ~ XP2200+, 13.5x multiplier, 133/33 FSB) I exit the BIOS and all is fine reboots no probs and runs all day fine.

The last but one occasion it hung and i reset, the BIOS had reset the parameters of the CPU screen, I set them all to the standard ones for my CPU, fine booted up worked great.

The last occasion it happened and I reset the BIOS now asks for a password!!! I have not set one at any stage, it also means I cannot get into the BIOS at all and check if all is OK - I just keep having to reset and hope it boots up fine.

I am contemplating clearing the BIOS, not to confident on this though as I am pretty reliant on my PC and would be stuck if anything went wrong.

Anybody got any ideas?

I probably misworded some of the problem, in that reset has no effect when the system hangs, I have to switch the power off at the PSU to be able to reboot!

I've heard of this, its a problem a few of ASUS's boards have. Some people say just hit the reset button repeatedly (like 10 times) and it will start up. Dont be afraid to reset the BIOS. You wont harm your PC doing it. You will have to go into the BIOS and reset a few things, it usually will set your fsb down to 100 instead of 133.
