Systems Virus control - Please help!!

A friend of mine is having some problems that I think may be virus related so let me run this by you guys.

His system
XP2600+
Soyo Mobo
512mb DDR333
Windows XP Pro (fresh install 1/8/04)
80 Gig HD
Nortons Anti-virus Pro 2004
Broadband internet connection

He just got Nortons a few days ago and ran it after first installation. It took about 30 minutes and found nothing. Then a few days later his computer started to slow down a lot. Internet Explorer started taking a long time to load and even general windows operations started slowing down dramatically. So he did what anyone would do and started running the antivirus again. Long story short, Nortons has been running for over 50 hours now and won't finish.

He found 2 viruses (didn't write them down) and restarted sometime 2 days ago. But this shouldn't be taking this long.
Task manager will not open completely and now his PC won't recognize his usb modem. Is this the Mydoom virus? What options does he have? How should he go about getting rid of that little b@stard.

Game night is coming up soon, so if we can't get this working tonight then we are going to format and reinstall the OS.

If you know the name of the virus go to symantec's site or mcafee's site and look up instructions for removal. You can also run an online scan from symantec's site. Removal is different with every virus and runs the gamut from easy to a real PIA.

This might help shed some light on the problem

Exactly!

First off dump NAV. I was using it for 4 years... until NAV 2004. Nothing but problems!

When I bought my MSI KT4-ultra FISR, it came with PC-Cillin. Gave it a try, and bye-bye Norton!! twice as fast with half the resourses.

The initial install will also scan and clean the system before continuing.

Gracias
He's bringing his computer by in a few minutes and I'll see if getting rid of NAV speeds things up a little.
Thanks again guys

Dumping NAV is trickey. Do a Google for:

Uninstall Norton antil virus 2004

It's hidded in Symantec's web site. I used one for 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 so there is probably one for 2004.

They know they are hosing systems due to corrupted uninstalls.

I'm struggling with a friends HP for the same Norton - related reason.

This might help:

OK I got NAV off but the machine is still slow. When I say slow I mean like 45 minutes to uninstall NAV and a good minute and a half for anything I click on.

I'm trying Solo antivirus now but it is still going to take forever. Solo is usually pretty quick (I use it on my lapdance and it works fine).

Anyone have any ideas what the problem is?
