*sigh* NTLDR

I've been trying to read through the previous messsages, but I'm not finding the exact same situation as I've got.
I have a P4 proc I just mounted onto a new motherboard, and into a new case. I have everything mounted properly, everthing's hooked up right...all the wires/plugs are firmly seated in their appropriate spots. I've gutted the puppy and re-installed/mounted everything 3 times now, to make sure my connections were right.

When I start to boot, it runs through it's checks, then gives me the 'missing NTLDR' message, suggesting I hit ctrl/alt/del to reboot. The first time I got this message was after the 3rd install of everything...before that, I didn't get the message, but the machine would just shut off before doing anything other than checks, or before I could make any CMOS/BIOS changes (heck, before I could even enter the areas I needed to check for possible changing).

Now, I get that message about every other boot try, but the machine's still shutting itself down arbitrarily before I can actually do anything with it.

I've tried with boot CD, floppy, I've tried without anything at all in either drive. I've tried with the MB setup disc....it keeps shutting down when it feels like it, and the few times it's made it to the screen asking how I want to start (safe/normal/?), it shuts down before the countdown's complete.

I thought maybe it was a HD problem...so I hooked that one up to my computer, saved what needed to be saved, and reformatted. I have a clean HD, in other words....trying to install WinXP Pro.

Anyone got any ideas why it keeps shutting itself down? I figure the NTLDR problem will get solved, but not without being able to keep the darn thing on!

Any suggestions welcomed....any more info needed, just ask, I'll do my best.

The Boot.ini file is missing or corrupt.

Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM.

Restart your computer.

When prompted to Press any key to boot from CD, press the Space bar.

At the Welcome to Setup message, press R to start the Recovery Console.

If you multi-boot this computer, select the installation of Windows XP that failed to start.

When prompted, type the administrator password and press Enter.

When the command prompt opens, type bootcfg /list and press Enter to display the entries in the boot.ini file.

Type bootcfg /rebuild and press Enter to scan your hard drives for Windows NT-based installations. Follow the on-screen instructions to add installations to the boot.ini file.

Good luck

Thank you. I've had some new developments...figures. I was able to boot from CD finally...but about to where it said it's searching for files to begin installation of the O/S, the stupid thing shut itself down. I have like a 30-45 second window to do things in before it shuts itself down each time. That's if I wait about 15 minutes before trying...if it's shut down once, it shuts down faster the next time, until it's barely coming on when the power button is pressed before it's shut down again.

!!!! I'm getting a headache, lol.

Is the fan on the processor turning?

Funny you should ask that...the processor only has a heatsink, a large one....it's out of a Dell. There was only one fan in the Dell, mounted in a hood type of arrangement, the hood being over the heatsink.
I've gone and bought another fan, but couldn't find a processor fan for a 478 socket(all I could find were 370s, and they are too small to fit).

I had the side off, and a small desk fan blowing around in there, since I'm positive it's a heat problem making the machine shut itself down continually. I have a backmounted fan, and will be installing the other fan here in a few minutes.

The backmounted fan(it came out of the Dell) is turning when the machine does run.

Well ohdarn, it sounds like you are well on your way to resolving the issue. It sounds like a heat thing to me too. I'm sure if you can get it to stop crashing, us techimoers will be able to help you solve the other problems. Welcome to techimo

Hehe, I can only hope. Still shutting down, but working on it.
I don't think the NTLDR thing is going to be a problem once I get the shutdown thing tackled. I did make it all the way to 'scanning for files' to install the O/S before one shutdown...so it was going to install.

Still, who knows? Glad I found this forum and thanks for the help so far. I'm sure I'll be visiting often, lol.
