Multiple sound / audio cards

Fellow Members,

Can I use multiple sound cards? In other words, I might be playing an MP3 through my integrated sound system. I then decide (for example) that I desire to pause the MP3 song I'm listening to in order to dictate a letter (say to my brother) utilizing a voice recognition program.

Presently I must stop and close out the audio component that was playing the MP3 in order to "free up" that device for the voice dictation.

I presently have a 24-bit sound card in a PCI slot that is not being utilized. I am thinking that I could simply plug my dictation microphone into the PCI sound card (or leave it where it is -- plugged into the integrated audio on the back of the motherboard), and utilize the second audio component for system sounds, MP3's, etc. I know that I can choose which audio device I desire to utilize for the voice dictation.

If the above configuration would work, then I would simply pause the MP3 that I was enjoying and begin utilizing the voice recognition program . . . Will this work? Has anyone successfully utilized two audio cards?

Thanks!

Brangwen

Note: Win2KPro

you can use multiple video cards so i dont see why you cant use multiple sound cards. as long as it lets you pick which device to utilize for which it seems that it could work...

in xp, when you go into the sounds control panel, you can select which device to use for wave playback, recording, and midi playback. go for it!
