Changing File Name - Case Change only

Ok, got a real strange one that needs extra input.

I have a user who's habit has been as follows. The secretary makes up a file, and places it on the server. He accesses the file, but first changes the name. The ONLY thing he changes is the Upper Case First Letter to a lower case first letter. He's been able to do this for sometime.

Now, all of a sudden, for no known reason, he cannot change the first letter case, UNLESS he first changes the name entirely. Trying to change just the case of the first letter makes the case stay UPPER rather than Lower. Making a letter change helps, but is double the work.

Example: Original file name - 'Example.wpd.' He wants it to read 'example.wpd.' In the past this was possible, but now he must first change it to something like 'exxample.wpd,' and then change the name again to 'example.wpd.'

I look forward to some help in identifying this problem.

He's using Windows XP and Wordperfect 10. (If it helps, he also accesses the files usinig the Open File dialog inside Wordperfect. At this point is where he makes the name change.)

Marvinator:

I utilize WordPerfect also (v. 5.1 thru v.11). It sounds that perhaps the problem is a "sharing violation." This sometimes happens to me as well, however no one else is using my computer.

There are two ways I customarily change file names. One is to open files, thereby exposing the entire WordPerfect directory. I then click on the file-name I wish to change. After one click, I very gently click it again (onetime). As you likely not the file name then becomes changeable. The second method I utilize is to open a file, hit the spacebar one time, then backspace then "Save as." This latter method can be quite tedious. I am afraid I have no other suggestions. Perhaps if you can find and "disable" the sharing violation then you can simply utilize the first method that I wrote above.

Good luck!

Thanks for your input, but you have not really addressed the problem. If "sharing violation" is the problem, then I'd be interested in this. But I already know how to rename files, and how to overwrite files. What I'm seeking is the reasons for this change in useability.

Anyone else have any thoughts?
