MAC mail program ?

Anyone know where the mac os stores the actual email files associated with its mail application?

My computer here at work received a couple of really big files over the weekend and they are choking the program. I can't get the program to show the list of emails...it just locks up. The inbox shows 1.5GB for the current size. So I was wondering if it would be possible to access the files outside of the mail program...they are on the hard drive I just need to know where.

System specs:

Dual G5 2.0
512MB Ram
OS 10.2.8
yadda yadda yadda

I guess no one here is that familiar with the mac os. Any help would be appreciated.
