just curious

have to pc's, one hooked directly to the wireless wrt54g wireless router, and one wireless pc. both on xp home, cable connection. what is the difference if i enable or disable DHCP on my router?

i understand a static IP address stays the same and DHCP will get assigned automatically, but does it matter what i use? and if i use DHCP, do i just leave the wireless pc settings to automatically obtain an IP--and the DNS settings blank.

if i use static IP do i use the same exact settings as the pc that is connected to the router, just a different IP?

im having some connection problems with my wireless pc and i want to rule out it having to do with IP settings

Regardless of how you get the IP information (manually entered or via DHCP) the important part is that you get the correct information. It makes no difference in actual usage of the network or Internet.

The key settings are typically:
* IP Address
* subnet mask
* DNS server
* Default Gateway (like if you need to access the Internet)

As a more direct answer to your question, yes. You should use the same settings as seen on the wired computer but change the IP address (same nework but different host number).

When you have a router, typically it's LAN IP address is set for as your DNS server (then it forwards the request).
Most router's will assign this information along with the IP address. Same goes for most ISPs' DHCP servers, they assign the DNS server settings too.

Yep that is the way it works for my computers. DNS and Default Gateway are set to the Router IP, works great.
