RH 7.3 Install Problem

Hi All,

I am wondering if anybody can help me.

I am trying to install RedHat 7.3 onto a machine but I keep getting the following error.

The kernel was unable to re-read the partition table on /tmp/hda (Device or resource busy). This means Linux knows nothing about any modifications you made. You should reboot your computer before doing anything with /tmp/hda

I have de partitioned the dish with FDisk and Disk Druid but I am still having no luck. I have also tried to use LILO and Grub as boot loaders.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Odds are very good there are several spelling mistakes in this post.

It is running on Dual AMD 2400+ MP Processor's, with a WD 80GB HDD.

It was running fine on RH9, but I need to re-install RH7.3 as we have some software that will not runn properly on RH9

RH 7.3 may have come out before your hardware did. So 7.3 may not even have support for it.

I have tried re-installing RH9 and had no problems, which makes me think that it is a driver problem.

I even tried installing RH7.3 after but got the same problem.

I partitioned the disk in the following way.

hda
-hda1 200MB /boot Ext2
-hda2 2000MB Swap
-hda3 77800MB / Ext2

I am running the following hardware.

Motherboard - Gigabyte 7DPXDW + Dual AMD SoA with RAID 10/100 LAN

2 x CPU's - AMD Athlon MP 2600+ "Thoroughbred" core

Memory - 1GB PC2100 (PC266) DDR ECC Registered

HDD. 80GB Maxtor ATA-133 (7200rpm, 8MB Cache)

Any thoughts?

do you work for motorola??

anywho - the controller (Promise PDC20267) is what i am guessing is the issue, why i am not sure, it looks like the kernel at time was being patched to support that controller. see here: -> http://seclists.org/lists/linux-kern.../Sep/0709.html , which kinda sucks because wirk began on it back in pre 2.4 days. ahywho - i am guessing redhat 8 was patched properly. it may be easier making that compatible with your program than 7.3 support you hardware.

also, is there another controller on the board, if so you probably hook teh dirver up to that, install rh 7.3 which should work with the chipsets controller, then if you wish install a new kernel and then move the drive to teh promise controller.

Ok following on from above.....

With RedHat 7.3 & 8.0 installs I get the same error message but NOT with version 9.0, If I choose to ignore the error message and continue with the install, when the machine reboots I get the following messages during the boot process

Red Hat Nash version 3.4.28 starting
mounting /proc filesystem
creating block devices
creating root devices
mkrootdev: label / not found
mounting root file system
mount: error 2 mounting ext2
pivotroot: pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed:2
umount /initrd/proc failed:2
freeing unused kernel memory: 240k freed
kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel

Then the machine hangs
