no post after new heatsink

I just got a new heatsink so I can start overclocking, but after I installed it the computer won't startup. It turns on, everything sounds normal, but then nothing. No post, no beeps, just all the fans whirring away.

I found that the reset button was pressed in, but I've fixed that. I've also tried reseating the heatsink and vid card, and clearing the CMOS, but still nothing.

I don't think I made a mistake on installing the heatsink. I've checked it over many times but it is fine.

mobo and cpu:
A7N8X (flashed to 1007- to fix a temp error)
athlon 2400+ (not overclocked, hoping to when I get it working)

perhaps you shocked the processor? try putting the old one in and see if the problem truly is the proc.

other than that, try to reset cmos again, then redo the jumpers to safety mode (usually 100fsb)... turn the pc on and hold insert.... this resets the bios as well.

see if this works. good luck.

I once had a similar problem, and I didn't reseat the ATX power connectors good enough. It has a clip on it, making it kinda firm to plug in.

The fans spun up, but nothing else, like you described. Also, do you have the additional four prong connector to power the cpu/ram?

Just the title of the thread makes me cringe.. every time I experienced this problem or had a friend tell me something similar it always turned out to be a crushed core..

I can only hope everyone is right.. reseat the ATX connectors and try another CPU... if that works swap yours back in and if it doesn't boot take a good look at the core.. it only takes a small chip to kill it.

some mobos wont boot without the heatsink plugged in...mabey the heatsink is not sending the proper signal back to the mobo...try the old heatsink and if it works RMA this one

I'm an idiot!!!

Don't get scared guys, it's all fixed. I just made a really stupid mistake.

Back before I found that the reset button was pressed in I cleared the cmos for the first time, but accidentally left the jumper there

I just noticed when I tried restarting with the stock heatsink, fixed it, and everything was fine! Then I put on the new heatsink and it booted normal. My CPU temp went from 57C down to 31C !!!

thank you all for your suggestions, too bad it was such a stupid mistake.

"too bad it was such a stupid mistake."

Actually we're just glad you didn't ruin your CPU. I cooked a 1600+ less than 48hrs ago just swapping out mobos.

By the way the heatsink is a Thermaltake volcano 11

It's rated max fan speed was 4800 rpms, but on mine it runs at 5200 rpms And it's cooled down my cpu amazingly!
It idles at 34C and only rises to 37C under load

my cpu fan only runs at 2500rpm (92mm). idles at 30-33C and full load from 37-41C. much quieter then case fans.
