Terminal services/remote desktop help

Not sure whether this should be in Apps & OSes or here, but since DVNT1 prowls this forum I thought here!

I have a mixed LAN with winXP Pro, win2k Pro and a win2k advanced server box. Currently using VNC to manage them remotely.

Some have suggested TS is superior, so I've been trying to use it. Works great for the winXP boxes, and using the RDP client on the win2k Pro installs allows me to connect to the current login (and manage by DC clients) fine.

BUT - when I try to login to my win2k Advanced Server form any of the boxes using the RDP client, it won't let me login to the exsisting session, but always creates a new one. I can't see my DC client.

Is there any way around this? Or cant I log into an existing session using RDP client on win2k server??

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Mick

Having no idea what rdp client is, are you selecting 'disconnect' from the terminal session instead of 'log off'.

Disconnecting puts the session in background and allows you to login it afterwards.
I run ts on my w2kserver, and can logon to the same ts session from any of my laptops.

Thanks, muno, but the problem is I want to log into the original console on the win2k server, and vass tells me I can't with TS.

It's not about the same session, it's about the existing console which is running FAD client and other handy apps.

Looks like I'll stick to VNC to managing the server remotely.

Thanks
Mick

Ha! If someone knows to to logon to the console session, please do tell me too.

I use, too, vnc for managing the console session.

For the record (this was posted in Is It Just Me thread, but wanted to put it here to answer the question for others.

Mick, if its Win2k server you can't TS into the console
If you ts into your box and disconnect (without logging off) your session will remain.

The catch with XP is (TMK) you CAN'T login to a seperate session, and can only login to the console.

I use dameware for console access.
In a larger environment using Dameware NT Utilities is a nice utility as well.

I don't have anything to add, those comments are my experiences too.

For me, I rarely logon to the console at all (especially since the servers are on the other side of the room).

I use a remote session and start up any special apps that I might need (although everything I normally need runs as a service).

The one reason I need to login to a console on a win2k box is we have a batch file that runs as a service (AutoExNT res kit app) and its not the most stable thing in the world ... the batch file, not the service itself)

So I gotta go in and clean it up and get it running again.
Other than that, if I need console access I use a RIB (Compaq stuff)
