wireless 11b and 11g range

I would like to know how much i can distance myself, horizontally and vertically, and stil get connection?

for example... Would I still be able to get connection if I had an access point (either 802.11b or 802.11g) on the 11th floor of a 14 story building and was outside the building near the parking structure for example? (estimated distance from building 100-200 feet)

thanks!

I've never seen anyone try to get the connection to reach 11 floors down. You should probably just set it up and try and see if there is a good connection.

maybe

In general, that distance isn't a big problem. I'm fairly certain it could be made to work (cost is uncertain of course). You may have to add an antenna or two).

It depends heavily on the equipment and related setup. You could test with a couple laptops and wireless cards (or even borrow an WAP and antenna).

if you used a signal booster (or 2) placed in good areas, then it could definately reach.

especially if you have a directional antenna + booster, most definately.

I used to have my WAP in the basement, and I'm on 2nd floor of a townhouse, and the signal was at about 50% ... but thats going THROUGH 2 floors and going UP..
Not just goign downstairs to the outside.

Check the "range" on this page.... good example for typ types of WIfI access.

http://www.linksys.com/products/wirelessstandards.asp

Personally I would go with the Wireless "G" standard.

The best advice given so far in this thread is test and see. That's the only worthwhile suggestion because that's the only way you'll know. The only disclaimer to that is if you put the AP or an aftermarket antenna in the window, then you'd have a pretty good shot. If you have line of sight THEN you can consider equipment claims (specs) on websites or manuals. They're generally bogus as well but can give you an idea. As soon as you lose the LOS in the equation all bets are off, and nobody can tell you what you'll get. Amps or higher gain antennas can/will help but guarantee nothing when you have obstacles in the way. Hell, even with LOS you can still have problems if you have other AP's in that building throwing out interference in the path. Test. That's how you know if you'll make it.
