popups ??????

I am getting a ton of popups from somewhere, even if the browser is closed. When I came home a bit ago it had a dozen ads open on the desktop.I ran a AV (AVG) and AdAware, both of which are up to date, and found nothing.
I'm not sure what the deal is,but is sure is annoying

I'm using
Windows XP Pro
IE6
Opera 7.23 (registered)

This is a week old build on a new system, and there is very few programs on the HDD from a clean format.

All help is appreciated
BC

No firewalls.

Just ads like for weight loss, vacations, and popup stoppers

I've never had a problem before, and have all the same stuff installed.

Here are a bunch of pop-up blocking programs. Also, do you have the Google Toolbar?

I would HIGHLY recommend a software firewall or a hardware firewall.

Such as free zonealarm (can be found at www.zonelabs.com) or a Linksys Broadband firewall.

p.s. Having a computer (Windows or otherwise) on the internet without a firewall running (and updated of course) is like leaving the front door open to your house with a sign on your lawn saying... "Please come on in.. I have tons of cool things for you to take and look at here, the door is always open".

Yes I do have the Google Toolbar, and get the ads anyway when I'm online. It does block the popups from the websites, but these come from somewhere besides a browser.

Since no one brought this up, maybe it's the XP Messenger Service that drives everyone insane.

If it is, go to Admin Tools -> Services -> Messenger, then disable it.

He wouldn't have a problem with this service if he had a firewall installed.

Send a message via AIM to lost-and-found
Also run Spybot S&D, sometimes it finds stuff that Ad-Aware doesn't.
