IBM Thinkpad 760XL Boot Error

Hi everyone,

I am new here and am very glad I found this forum...maybe you can help. Recently I picked up an IBM Thinkpad 760XL (really old I know) tha will not boot. When I boot it up it says boot error. Well I tried getting a Windows 98se Startup disk which I did and that gave me a prompt. When I try doing anything to the hard Drive, it says wrong version of dos. Well looking at the c:\ I see that there really isn't any dos on the machine. I tried getting a dos 6.22 disk from the net but nothing would happen when I booted up the machine. I guess it may not be compatible with dos 6.22. Anyways, I was simply wondering how I could get dos onto the machine and when I did, how I wold be able to get my portable CD-ROM drive to work on it. It connects through an scsi plug on a PCMCIA card. I tried getting a whole bunch of drivers from IBM but I really need dos or somehow to get dos 6.22 to work.

Thanks for your time

Welcome to TechIMO!

I'm just trying to think this thru here with you, but when you say that you got a 6.22 dos boot disk from the net and tried booting nothing happened, what exactly do you mean? Does it not boot at all or is there an error message that comes up?

Can you get into the bios setup by hitting the F5 key, I can't remember if that is the right key or not its been a long time since I had a Thinkpad 760. I remember wrestling with mine on some similar issues. Have you tried IBM's web site there is a lot of helpful stuff there even tho you have an old Thinkpad.

I had an external cd-rom that plugged into the parallel port that I was trying to get working and finally did after a lot of work.

Well, thanks for your time but I have resolved my problem. It seems all I had to do was install Dos 7. Then it was smooth sailing from there.
