Limit access to hard drives....

Hey all,

I am back after an unintended break.

I have a question, which may be prescient for you guys w/kids. My 'kid' is my BOL (brother-in-law) who lives my wife and I. I know I can limit his access to specific files and folders.

Is there any way, I can limit access for a user to a whole hard drive? I have Windows XP Professional. My back up drive has well, a lot of backups and data, and I'd like to it off-limits from him...

Is this easy? Or even possible?

Thanks!

Should be relatively simple to keep kids outa a drive, provided he uses different users for himself and the kids.

Just get him to set permissions on the drive Security tab (right click it) and only allow access for himself.

Pretty sure that will do it. Not sure if he needs any other changes to make this stick or nor.

He will need to make sure he has password enabled his screensaver as well to stop casual access while he is logged in.

Cheers
Mick

edit: I see its a BOL not kids. Same applies, though.

btw, you have to have NTFS file system for Windows file system security. You can convert now if it isn't already.

You can easily convert form Fat32 to NTFS by typing

"convert c: /FS:NTFS" at a prompt. You can substitute C: for any desired volume.

If you want to convert from NTFS back to FAT32 (although there's no good reason to do that aside from Dual-booting with Linux) the corect command is

"Format C:"

So, I do set the drive permissions on the drive itself from my computer? In other words, if I wanna keep BOL off my E: drive, I just go to the drive security tab (WinXP Pro, NTFS) and limit it's access to me?

There are a few different ways. Keep in mind using Deny takes precedence over any Allow privilege.

So one way would be to add your kid's logon name to teh security tab and click Deny.

You could have him move out and change the locks on the doors.

Funny you say that!

My wife is getting sick of her brother. I just him off my comp, or at least certain stuff.

I'll write back and give ya an update-- or if I need help.

Hellllp!

Okay, I right click on my D: drive I pull up properties, then Sharing and Security... Looks like there is not thing there but how to set file sharing...

Then I go into Control Panel for Administration, and click security, there are whole mess policies here and there but nothing specific to what I want.

My user acct is the computer administrator for my computer... What am I missing?
