A friend has a pc in his small engine shop and the cd drive will only read disks about 1/2 the time. The entire machine is covered in dirt, dust, grease and gunk. Is it possible to remove the cd-rom drive from the tower and open the drive and clean the inside? It quit reading all disks until he blew it out with an air hose and then it would read music cd's but still not software cd's. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. Or should I just install a new drive?
a new drive would probobly be your best bet as you can easily find a good new one for 15 bucks...there are kits you could buy with a special cd that cleans the drive but those are likely to run 10-20 bucks and probobly will either not work or only ork for a short time
Go out and find a 'Cleaning CD'. It cleans the lens on the CD drive, which shounds like it's dirty. At the bottom of this CD is a little brush that cleans the lens. Lighly coat it with rubbing alchohol to increase the cleaning power.
With exposure to such a dirty environment, you'll probably need a new drive, plus you'll probably start to see other problems (PS, floppy drive, cooling fans and filters come to mind). Any chance, once you've got things working, that the PC be moved to a cleaner location?

The machine has to stay where it is. He uses it to look up engine parts in his shop. I've cleaned the floppy and inside of the case before when I did other repairs/upgrades, it was NASTY ! Guess I'll just install a new cd drive.
