Hello. I'm looking to upgrade my PC2700 RAM (that can barely reach 310MHz) to PC3200 RAM for my NF7-S rig. I'm going to go the two sticks route, but am unsure if I really need to get two-512s for 1GB total. 512MB seems to be treating me fine now--I'm a big gamer and downloader, but I don't encode films that much. Will I really need 1GB any time in the next year, or is 512MB still safe with XP's pretty good memory management and Cacheman running?
Personally, I think 512 is enough if, like you say, you aren't encoding or major photochopping. I've had both and the difference was negligible. So, I'm running 512 now and probably will be for a while.
I use 512MB Memory (not DDR) with Windows XP and it works without any problems at all. So you shouldnt consider an upgrade to 1GB unless you use programs that need massive amount of your memory.
I've run both 1GB and 512MB in the same PC and didn't notice one bit of difference, even when Photochopping. I put it back down to 512MB so I could use the RAM elsewhere.
Cool... the only time I use it up is when I'm using bittorrent to get some (legal, of course) big files, probably because of the HD access all over the drives. I'm assuming extra wouldn't alleviate the problem anyway. Sounds like 2x256 or 1x512 is the way to go.
