ECS L4VXA2:::Common Lockups to the System --Help!

P-4 2.66ghz
ECS Elitegroup L4VXA2 Motherboard
512 MB PC2700 @533mgz
80 Gig HD
Creative Sound Blaster
Windows 98SE OEM
PNY Nvidia 5700 Ultra 128MB

Hi everyone, Im having problems with this motherboard. We Purchased this Motherboard from "Fry's Electronics" W/ a P-4 Processor @ 2.66Ghz on sale for $159.99.

Had Everthing Installed by CompUSA. Opon receiving the Computer, we Installed Unreal. Within Minutes the Game would freeze the Whole system.

Installed Quake, Same thing.

Installed Unreal 2, Again no luck!

No matter what game we tryed to play, the Computer would freeze.

O.K, so we decided to do a complete reinstall of the Operating System (98SE) and reformat the HD, and Pulling the Sound card to rule that out

Installed the Nvidia software and Installed Unreal----It did not freeze but the picture quality was Crappy because we did not install the Motherboard Software and It was running in PCI mode.

Now, Once we Installed the Motherboard Software, checked to see if we were in AGP 8* mode, we where. Loaded Unreal, and BAM, the system locked up.

I,ve tryed the ECS website, but Can't get through. What the hell Is Wrong with this Motherboard? I believe the Software is Faulty.

Is this a Common Issue with this Motherboard? Games Locking the System?

Help!!!!!!!!!!!

The usual stuff - inadequate power supply (migrated from old box?), poor cooling.

what peter said . i think it is the power supply not having the gumption . i have found from personal use that ecs mobo's need a good power supply or they just don't cut it .

but don't listen to me listen to Pete M he is the man when it comes to ecs/pcchips/amtron mobo's ..

ANY mainboard/gfx card/CPU combination needs an adequate power supply, no matter who made the mainboard. The symptoms vary between unstable from the start to sudden death later, but too weak is too weak.

When it comes to ECS buyers, they are almost always on a shoestring budget and trying to use old parts. That's the nature of budget building. It's unfortunate that ECS takes the blame for these budget builds. It's rarely the motherboard at fault.

Cheap parts are also at fault.

I would never skimp on my personal system.

In the end it seems you always pay, one way or the other.

I would stay from ECS MBs as far as I can. I bought a very same combo from Frys, and had a very same lock-up problem. But I returned the combo to Frys a week later after trying everything with no success.
