Dell 2400 Celeron Mods

Okay I've decided to turn my sisters Dell into a Gaming Machine since she's using my rig a little too much and she's basically attached to the screen playing FFXI Online like a champ..... So I've decided to go Custom on Parts and Physical Appearence.....

I need some suggestions and input on this since I don't know about company PCs and the products they use so I'm clueless on Pre-Built Machines... Here's what I'm thinking of dropping in if it's possible since there's no AGP Slot.....

1) BFG Tech ASYLUM GeForce FX5200 256MB DDR PCI

Or ATi Radeon 9200 128MB SE DDR PCI

2) Kingston HyperX PC-2700 333MHZ 2x512

Or OCZ PC-2700 333MHZ 2x512

3) Upgrade Stock Celeron 2.4GHZ CPU with Intel P4 2.8GHZ 400/533 FSB 512KB CACHE

4) Upgrade Stock PSU 250Watts with Vantec Stealth 520W Power Supply

5) Upgrade Stock 40GB HDD with 120GB WD 8MB 7200RPM

6) Upgrade Stock 48X Burner with LiteOn 52x32x52

7) Upgrade Extra Slot with a Pioneer AO6 DVD Burner

8) Upgrade SoundMax to SB Audigy 2 ZS Gamer

that's about it on the the upgrade... feel free to voice your opinions.... as for case mods.....

I'm thinking of Cutting out the Round Dell Symbol Logo on the Side... then painting everything Cyborg Green like the ALIENWAREs and painting the inside chasis Fluorescent Purple and drop in a UV Light. Than After drop in a plexi glass window, cutting out dell letter from the logo and placing them on the glass. Than I'd replace Case fans with Purple and Green LED Fans... then adding some Purple LED Lights in the Exhaust holes in the frontside of the Comp.. bringing a type of underglow being hidden inside. After that I'll place in Black Drives and I'll have some type of good looking case... I hope that sounds very interesting.... I'll make a site on this project as soon as my sis gives me the funds for the project. Let me know what you think...

If your going through all that work you may as well get a new mobo, it'd be sad to do all that work and not get a decent system. If the case is ATX you should get a new 800fsb, SATA, dual channel 400 ram, 8x agp, etc. motherboard and a hyperthreaded 800mhz fsb 2.8ghz P4 (it is cheaper than the 2.8ghz 533fsb processor). Even if it is not ATX I think with the level of modding your doing you could put the holes in yourself. Then you can get an 8x agp 9600xt for example and your system would proform as good as it looks the new mobo and vid card would cost only about $150 more keeping your system at it's best for years to come. Good Luck!

Sweet.....

what would you suggest for a 800FSB Dual Channel DDR400 Mobo?

ASUS P4P800 Deluxe
Intel D865GBF
Abit IC7-MAX3
Abit AI7

and I've got an extra ATi Radeon 9800 Pro and HyperX 1GB DDR400 PC-3200 Kit... I was gonna use it for my next rig.. but since the Dell didn't support any of it I went for Single Channel and PCI idea. But maybe it is better to replace the Mobo. Right now I'm using a P4P800 on my rig and it's sweet... and I heard the ABIT IC7-MAX3 is amazing.... would you think it's a good investment? and I'll probably be running 3.0GHZ P4 800FSB if I do end up replacing the board.

If you can get a mobo based on the intel 875P Chipset, it gives the besed proformance but is costly, such as the Asus P4C800-E deluxe. If you need something cheaper perhaps a mobo with the Intel 865PE Chipset would do nicely, I'd go for the ASUS P4P800 Deluxe in the $120 range, in the $150's I'd go with Asus P4C800-E deluxe, It benchmarks the best out of the 875P Chipset mobos and is about $20 cheaper than the ABIT IC7-MAX3.

Someone chime in on us here about the power supply/motherboard as far as Dell being proprietary.

I think the Dells have a non-standard power supply, even though it is a regular looking atx...the power supply AND motherboard are slightly re-wired from a normal atx.

So..if you replace power supply, replace the motherboard too.

One thing to do with ANY XP machine to get some more speed is to turn off some of the "fluff" junk that Microsoft has turned on by default...look here for 'XP Services Configurations" www.blackviper.com (I pretty much use the "safe" setup)
