Any A64 Chipset & Mobo Recomendations?
Hey all,
I'm lookin at building a new PC soon, i would like to make it an Athlon64 setup.
Which chipset is currently the best option to go with, the nforce3 or the KT800?
And can anyone recomend a good motherboard i should look out for?
Thanks!

The best chipset effort currently is SiS 755. You get full speed HyperTransport like on the VIA chipset and unlike the NVidia, and you get the same excellent I/O throughput SiS has always been having while VIA's is somewhat slower - particularly on the IDE channels.
ECS 755-A2 board now available, see review on ocworkbench.

Hardwarezone.com just did a round up, it's a long read, 49 pages. But it gives you the pro's and con's of many motherboards, and the Nforce3 and the Via's chipset, the KT800.
The round up can be found here |

Unfortunately, that "roundup" skipped the AMD, ALi and SiS chipsets. Not that much of a roundup as you might think ...

Indeed, but I guess they rounded up the most popular chipsets. In order to read up on the other chipsets, like the ones you named, I guess you have to read reviews on the particular board.

well what are you looking to spend on a chipset. i am going for the A64 3200+ which i thinik is about 270 from newegg. It is only 50 dollars more exspensive than the 3000+ so i figure its worth it. i didnt opt for the 3400+becausae it is about 200 dollars more. and the chip is only increased 200mhz. The FX chip is about 750 to give you a ballpark. The 3400+ is about 404. It probably isnt worth getting a 3400+ because it is not that much of a proformance increase and it is still only the 754 chipset as apposed to the FX chip which is a 940/939

The performance is nearly as good as the FX-51, but it costs less and doesn't require registered memory. Quote:
From AnandTech.com: With the Athlon 64 3400+ AMD has effectively killed any reason to shell out the extra bucks for an Athlon 64 FX; the 3400+ is basically as fast as the Athlon 64 FX 51 at a lower price point. | Take a look at the benchmarks here: http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=1941&p=1 |
