really slow k7s5a

Hi all. Trying to fix a machine as a favor to a friend. It's only about a month old and runs awful. I saw it the day it was built and it ran perfect. Here's the specs:

K7s5a pro
xp2200
512 crucial pc2100
seagate 7200 rpm
windows xp

I don't think the rest matters.

So anyways it takes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes to boot. When right clicking on "My Computer" and choosing properties, it takes more than a minute to display the general information. Programs take ages to load too.

I really don't think it is a software issue but I have been wrong before. So far I have managed to reinstall the ide controller to get it back into UDMA mode because it was stuck in PIO and that didn't help. I can't find anything else wrong with it. Bios settings are perfect, no virii, no spyware/adware... nothing.

Anybody ever see this before? It's like running XP on a 486

i had the same problem with mine . ecxcept mine would take an hour to boot . what fixed it was a power failure ..... i think there is a problem with usb and xp . it will kinda lock up the io . i tried everything but what fixed it was a power failure . so try this . unplug it overnight then try to reboot it the next day .
do a google for mup.sys you will see alot of people with this problem and them all explain what they did . it seems to be a usb issue with xp .

Easiest way to tell would be to stick another hard drive in and load windows/drivers/etc. Best way to tell if its software or hardware issues...

Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Drivers, AIM and Norton AV. When starting windows, I stopped counting the progress bar at 60 passes and it kept going for a while. My machine only makes 5 passes with the progress bar. I really think it's a hardware thing but I'm not sure. Might start swapping parts tomorrow.

Edit: Wow you guys are quick I was just replying to MDS. I will have to do some research on the USB issues. If that doesn't work I may try Mr. C's idea. That sounds better than swapping the mobo out

Is it normal for this board to show SIS and VIA USB controllers in device manager?

Yes, it's normal. That board has a VIA USB controller, which connects through the SIS USB root hub (if I remember correctly).

No The "pro" revision boards (v5.x) still have the SiS 735 chipset with six USB 1.1 ports on two OHCI engines, plus an additional VIA PCI USB controller bringing the four USB 2.0 ports on the rear of the machine. The VIA chip implements a total of three USB entities - twin UHCI engines for USB 1.x and one EHCI for USB 2.0.

Windows being slow to start practically always is a software configuration issue. The #1 favorite screwup is to have the onboard ethernet active and set to DHCP address mapping, without having it connected to a DHCP server.

Would that mean that the USB ports built into the motherboard are the USB 2.0 ports, and the 3 headers at the bottom of the board are 1.1?

Here's some info that might help. It seems that there's a registry patch for SiS USB controllers when running Windows XP.
