Hard Drive is quite loud

I went over to my brother's house and noticed thier hard drive was quite loud. A lot louder than my computer setup which has a lot more stuff inside.

I just replaced a friends hard drive that was clunking really loud which I heard personally so I know it's definantely not to that degree.

It's a constant loud sound (like a really loud fan) but it's the hard drive.

I'd like to know if this could be an early sign that this hard drive might fail some time soon.

it could just be vibrations resonating in the case. ive seen computers where the harddrive vibrated just right to cause the hole case to vibrate....

otherwise it could be failing hard drive

They're not supposed to be loud.

With the price of HDD's these days it wouldn't hurt to get another and start saving data before it's too late.

IMO.

Bill

P.S. Try the manufacturer's diagnostic disk.

I second Bill's opinion. Better to be safe than sorry, yes?
One thing you can do is to check if the HDD is S.M.A.R.T. capable (and has it enabled). That should give you some feedback as to the overall health of the HDD...

Actually I forgot to mention I did do a Maxtor diagnostics (no problems) and checked the SMART status with a program called speedfan. The performance was 100% but the fitness was 50%.

Anyone know what that means?

And yes I already copied the entire drive over to another drive (which is now the master)

SMART can tell a drive is failing, before it starts to loose performance. It always seems to be right.

It means the drive is failing. It could go for several more years or die tomorrow, but it's headed for the deep-end.
