I hope you did a 'Create System Restore Point' before you installed SP1? Also. did you configure the system after installing Win XP?
It could be modem/driver/com port problems. Go to System Info and look to see if there are any conflicts or what not.

I am using Dail-up and there are no com conflicts. It also seems like there is a problem with the internet explorer 6

IE 6 uses alot of patches. Did you download SP1 over the internet? It may have corrupted some of the program or data. I'd tinker with it a little, but if the data in your browser is bad I don't think there's another way around it: clean re-install Windows XP/system drivers and configure. If that has to happen..well, I've had worse happen me. Also remember if you need to do the above, slow the FSB down to 100/100Mhz. I've had problems with data corruption with a speedy install of Win XP. I'd also download SP1 in bits and pieces and not the whole thing.
You can uninstall the individual fixes, which means you can install them piece-meal and see which one works before doing the others. Good Luck wallie_x

Try updating your modem driver, I once had this problem too.
After updating modem driver then solved.
