remove the existing one and put the cd-rw in it's place.

sorry to hear about your problem but it sounds asthough you need to take a look at getting a new mother board or purchasing a seperate ide controller card so that you can connect your harddrive to the add in card and then hook up your cd-rw to the existing IDE port. you may wanna do some research and find out if your board has pci slots for expansion or just the old ISA slots, it sounds asthough your pc is ready for an upgrade and there are plenty of inexpensive mother boards that will serve most of your basic needs.

You do know you can hook up 2 IDE devices to to one IDE channel?

I am not aware of anything put out with only 1 IDE channel. (of course there are a lot of things I'm not aware of )

What are the specs of your system?

Brand, MB, etc.

I do have PCI slots. When i bought the cd-rw it came with the cd-rw and one wire which i plugged in.

I have no idea what im doing really.I could have all the right things etc but just setting it up all wrong

I put in the cd-rw and plugged in the power cable what was already in the computer to the cd-rw then i put in the small black wire i got with it in. I now have the main socket empty where a ide thing is meant to go into right?

I can open and close the cd-rw so there is power there.

Tiny
800mhz
192mb ram
20gb

what else you need to know?

The IDE ribbon cable that is connected to the DVD-ROM has a 2nd. connector in the middle of the cable for a slave drive.

I'm assuming that the DVD is set to master instead of single.

Change the jumper on the back of the CD-RW to the "slave" setting and install the drive and then plug the middle connector on the ribbon cable into the CD-RW.
