You need a Good Video Card. There is alot of reviews out there so you need to look at the specs and reviews to firm your decision. Most people use ATI and NVIDIA.

Another good thing is the mobo and processor. Use AMD for better performance and Price. Most people use the ASUS or ABIT Mobos. VIA and Gigabyte are also runners up. Stay AWAY FROM ECS. There mobos are very unstable as far as I have tested.

With $1000 bucks you can get a nice computer. Either a NVidia 5900 or an ATi 9800, wherever your preference lies. A 2500+ is also a nice cheap chip from AMD, which I have and it works very nicely. Its all a matter of preference really. Put something together on newegg's wish list and see what the price comes out to.

is it $1000 for everything including the monitor, speakers, etc. or the system alone. Is there anything you want specifically such as a DVD burner, a certain case, etc.? Do you want Intel, AMD or do you care?

TigerDirect.com is a really good site too it will explain terms and stuff thats mentioned (i.e. FSB). Also for Tigerdirect.com if you see an AMD processor there are links of videos that show you how to install the processor, heatsink n fan, etc. Its really helpful, i sure wish i would have had it when i built my first pc. i also agree with everyone else: GO AMD! you get alot more bang for your buck with AMD. Asus motherboards are good as well

Good luck!

what OS are you planning on using? If you're planning on win98, keep in mind win98 does not work well with more than 512ram.
I recently upgraded my computer with an AMD 2500 after reading that this chip OCs very well.
Choose your graphics card carefully that will make probably the bigest difference in your gaming.
Keep cooling in mind also, choos a case that alows for quality cooling, don't get a small case where the power supply will be right next to the processor.
It will be worth the money to get extra cooling fans if case does not come with them. (at least one in the front and at least one in the back).
You will also want a quality PS most cases come with cheap ones that don't last long.
Thats my opinion so far for this thread...

Try this for $1,000:

1> CPU - ATHLON xp 2500+ with 333MHz FSB and 512K L2 Cache
2> Motherboard - FIC AU13
3> Memory - 512 mb DDR 333
4> Videocard - ATI Radeon 9600 PRO
5> Hard Drive - 120GB WD 1200JB
6> Optical Drive - Pacific Digital U-30182 DVD +/-R/CD-RW dual format DVD and CD burner
7> Case - Antec Lanboy Aluminum case with 350W PSU
8> OS - WinXP Home
9> Speakers - Logitech z-321 3.1 speakers with soundwoofer

More or less $1,000. (Except for the speakers, most of this was taken from the Maximum PC September 03 edition - Lean Machine 2003)
