K7S5A won't post with Tbred 2100+

Powers up ...silence...shutsdown. Not sure what rev the board is but does have the XP sticker. The Athlon CPU is new and this is the only mobo I have available to test with. Ram is generic PC2100 266 DDR. Sorry for the newbie question but I only do this every couple of years.

What to try first?

try pc100 ramchip?
find an older cpu to test mobo?
buy newer mobo?

Welcome to Techimo!

Are you getting a post screen? And can you get into bios setup? (Press Del while posting)

I would replace the battery first. It is a CR 2032. Then clear the CMOS - there is a jumper near the battery with three pins. Move it to the other two for a few seconds.

Next try different ram, but only one stick at a time in slot 1.

Is this a brand new build or are you updating the CPU?

Look at the bottom edge of the board for the version sticker. Usually it's just a #, nothing else.

no beeps, no video, no bios, no post. gotta be the ram, cpu, or mobo, right? I have heard that it takes a few tries to get the mobo to recognize the cpu but how many times? the cpu and ps fans run maybe 4-5 seconds then shutdown. Nothing smoking...yet. I've cleared the CMOS several times to no avail. The ram is good but not necessarily right for this mobo/chip.

thanks for all replies

that board is known to only like good ram and good psu's so thats where i would look first . if you can change out the ram to a different type try that if you have it . then the power supply .

I think you may have a short.

Try taking the MB out of the case and set it on a towel with just the video card, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and one stick of ram. Power it up by shorting pins 2 & 4 (Pg 9 of the manuel). See if you get farther.

Edit: Take a look at the pins where you seat the power plug in the board. Mine bend easily and maybe you fubar'd one.

Dont chase after a batt. yet. Even IF the batt. dead it will post. Safety settings are default and that is what it'd be running at. As for recognising cpu. Ive had a Duron 1gig A 1600+ and a 2200+ now in our k7s5a. Picked everyone of them up first try. I would check to see if the CMOS reset jumper is set to NORMAL. Not reset. Happens often. I did go with good mem though. samsung fan here.

Tried another stick of ram and voila! she booted right up BUT, now I'm seeing "unknownAMD processor" running at 1600mhz. I'm guessing this means I need to flash the bios. Any recommendations on which ver bios?

Thanks for all your help.

No bios flash needed. All the k7s5a board rev. and all bios versions supported up to 2200+. What ya need to do is make sure multi is set right and the fsb is at 133mhz. Not 100mhz (default)
