AIM 5.5 Beta

I know quite a few people here use AIM so I figured I'd post about this. I however, dont know how many of you know theres more than the 5.2 version out.

The new version is pretty cool: Pop up notifications, play games with buddys, etc.

The download is here.

Yup. been using v5.5.3501 for a couple of weeks now. The buddy list pop up notifications kinda get annoying after a while though.

Yes, thats why I shut them off. Also, as I just read, you can sign on multiple screen names if you have them. And also if you have a message box open you can see when someone goes idle/away and when they come back from idle/away. Very cool.

I had it on my other computer for a few months now, but the only thing that bugged me was my away messages were all messed up. For instance, "BRB" would be "Default away message" when I clicked on them from the list. But now that beta has come out they have fixed that.

AIM sucks, trillian (gaim for linux) works much better. AIM is so far behind so many other IM agents in features, and yet they dont seem to care. Oh well....good thing for trillian.

i personally didnt like trillian (granted i used the freebie version).

it had annoying sounds everytime someone did something but not when messaging. i also found it a pain to have to hit global back when back. if i typed a message i would still be away... i dont know....

AIM sucks so bad that only 22 million non-AOL subscribers use it.

When you compare it to something like ICQ, it does suck bad. Most people use it because it is simple, but for more advanced users, imo, ICQ is a much better option. (or trillian w/ aim, yahoo, icq, and mirc) It sucks because it lacks the features that are standard on other IM programs.

shawshank62, so many people use it because so many people use it. Ask any AIM user, why do use AIM? They'll tell you, Because all my friends use it.

Yeah because my friends use it. Also I like AIM (I'm actually using version 4.XXX) because it is simple and clean (well, with DeadAIM and AIM+ anyway). All I use AIM for is to text msg people, and occasionally throw files around. I don't need voice chat- games- Themes- email- stocks- this- that- etc. Just text messaging!

I used to use ICQ (Way back when it was still an alpha) and what I did like about it that AIM does not have was that you could send messages to offline people- so they would recieve them if they got online. It was like a fast version of email in case you wanted to send someone a quick message.
