2nd IDE controller gone

I just changed HDD in my computer last night.Put 2 known working HDDs from my main system in my studio computer which I have had no problems with at all.
Everything worked, burned a CD and everything.Used it this afternoon, and still worked great.Tonight I booted it up,and got a BSOD,missing VXD,and then the 2nd IDE controller not working. Can't access the burner, but I can access the second HDD.
Thinking that it was a windows probelm, I reinstalled over the OS,and still no change.I formatted again and reinstalled 98SE,instead of ME,and still same thing.
It will list the HDDs and CDs during bootup, and will find them in the BIOS.It lists C,D,E in the explorer, and F as a removable disk(CD-RW)The burner is also redflagged in the Device manager, and a yellow (!) by the 2nd controller.
The IDE is enabled in the BIOS as well.

Windows 98SE
Amptron 8400c MOBO
400MHZ K6/2
Virge 3d 4mb PCI Video
6.1 and 4.3 WD Caviar HDDs
Teac CD-ROM Mitsumi CD-RW
Modem
128 MB PC133

Is this MOBO on the way out?

You said you reinstalled the OS, but have you installed your latest motherboard drivers, specifically the IDE Controller?

http://www.amptron.com/html/drivers5.html#PM-8400C
(you'll have to scroll down to yours, it's not working right for some reason)

EDIT: I don't see any IDE Controller driver downloads for 98.

I've had problems with my mobo detecting my optical before, too. I found that updating the firmware or the BIOS usually did the trick.

Did you try a different IDE cable?...did you make sure the pins on the board and hard drive were straight and none bent or broken?.. any of this would prevent the drive form working. I am not sure about this..but if the controller was defunct, would BIOS still recognize anything connected?..maybe, and maybe not.

Personally, I have had some bad luck recently with IDE cables...working just fine, then all of a sudden..nothing..then, a BSOD with the words "Unable to write to drive C:. Data may be lost... I would shut down, mess around in the case..reboot and it would be ok for awhile, then start again...finakky, I replaced that ribbon cable and it has not acted up again.. I have also had problems with the DC voltage to a drive not making good contact in the molex connector somewhere.. and that device would stop working. IDE sockets and molex cable sockets are poor to say the least.

Mike 98 has always loaded the drivers for everything on this board,I've been using it for 3 years.

It does have the latest BIOS release already.

Haven't tried the cables,I figured if it listed everthing during boot, then all is well, guess that may not be true.

The IDE is enabled in the BIOS as well.

redflag = conflict . be it a driver or a jumper setting, or cable. Something is amiss.

1. check all the jumpers. (yes again)
2. check all the cables.
3. and then try reloading the drivers.

Nunya, I did have both HDD and Cd-RW pinned as slaves. That's what I get for trying to do 3 computers at the same time.

Looks like I'm not so good at multi-tasking

Good call, everything is working great now
