Windows XP Licanses
Hey guys,
I have a quick question. The other night I assisted an associate of mine in cleaning up a mess that another guy left at a small Tax Office.
Besides this guy not knowing what he was doing he decided to install XP Pro on all the systems.
The problem here is that these systems must be, with no exceptions, 100% legal. The guy said that all he does is call up M$ pay them $10 and he gets a new product key. How true is this, and should I be telling those people that they need to purchase new licenses for the systems.
It strikes me as kind of odd considering I was getting a quote from CDW for $165 per license for XP Upgrade and $10 for the media.
Any help would be gladdly appreciated.

as far as I know the only way to do this is to the oringal purchace od a multi-site package, if you had that , you would surly know it,
there is no way that he is telling you the truth and all the install he did was with a priated copy of xp-pro, I would bet money on it.
you can verify this by looking for the system info on a couple machines to see if they have the same key.
this is just my opinion, to the best of my knowledge.
collegges can't even do what he is telling you

Hmm,
Been looking around the web and I honestly can not find any info about this.
Does anyone know if M$ charges you a small fee to give you a new Product key if you lost your old one?

One other thing, I would ask for a copy of each License Key the person is using to install each machine and a copy of the license certificate.

Well I did ask for the actuall paper and I was told that he does not have it, but that you can call M$ and verify it.
This has tiped me off as to something shady.
I have recomended that they purchase the OS in the near future to make sure they are in the clear with the Law.

MS doesn't sell XP licenses for $10, period.

The M$ install "media" (the CDs) can be had from M$ for $5 or $10 for many of their products... but as others above stated, M$ has very few products whose license key can be had for less than $100.
