motherboard won't power up

This is my first time on this board and I did a search for this and didn't find it so if this has been answered before, please point me to the thread.

I am trying to repair a family members Compaq Presario 5012 pc. The power supply went bad and took the motherboard out with it. The reason I believe this is because I plugged another PS into it and the cpu fan came on but did not POST. The second time I tried booting it did nothing.

So I ordered a DFI CM33-TL board and a new PS for it and when I hooked it up, the red standby light on the board came on but nothing else. I tried another PS and removed everything but the memory and processor (which is a Pentium 3 1Ghz) and still get nothing. Removed the memory module and still nothing. Called DFI support and the tech immediately told me it was a bad board and to have it replaced by the seller. I did that and now I have another one that is doing the exact same thing. I find it highly unlikely that I got two bad ones in a row so there must be something else.

Could a bad processor cause this? Since I don't have a spare P3 laying around I have no way to test this.

Any ideas?

Hate to say it but I think that the processor is the problem, do you have a computer handy that you can check the cpu in? BTW all the reviews on the DFI MB it seems to be a good Board quality wise, so I think your right that it is awful unlikely that you got two boards that were bad.

Unfortunately, no I don't have anything else I can test this processor in. Now I plugged the speaker in to see if I could get at least a beep or something but nothing. I even took everything off the board including the cpu and memory and still get no beeps.

Is it possible this could be a ground issue? I'm going to take it out of the case and hook everything up and see if that makes a difference. I'll let you know what I find. Thanks for the help.

what is the video card you are useing ? is it onboard? i don't know anything about the motherboard you have but it might not be able to run an older video card do to the voltage the newer cards take . the newer video cards run on 1.5 volt and the older cards run at 3.3 volts . SOME newer boards aren't able to puch the 3.3v for the video card and they won't boot .

Thanks for the help guys but I figured it out. It was a ground problem. The funny thing is, I specifically put the little washers in to prevent that. After hooking everything up outside the case and getting it to boot, I put it back in without the washers and everything is fine. So I'm happy now I can get this thing running and out of my house!
