What version of Linux?

I am just starting to use linux and need to know what verion i should be using. I am going to attempt to use Mandrake 9.2 on my main computer, but I also want to put it on a small laptop i have. It is a small tosheba 300mhz Intel, with 94mb of ram and a 6 gig hard drive. I don't think that Mandrake will run on it very well so i was looking for something else. I have never used linux, so for now I only want to use it to instant message and surf the web.

I am also looking for any good starters guides to linux, since i know almost nothing about it.

thanks

Mandrake is a good distro to learn on. SuSE is another great distro.

Mandrake ... #1 for those starting to use Linux.

Mandrake's install demo (for 9.0 but it's still accurate) .....

I just installed Mandrake 9.2 on an old Thinkpad 385xd it has a 233 mhz processor and 96 megs ram. My son uses it for instant messaging (gaim). yes, it is slow but it works fine for him to use and learn Linux. He is using KDE as his windows manager as well.

There was only one problem with the install and that was the sound card which we haven't figured out yet.

tom

ps, anyone interested in trading the latest Suse cd's for mandrake 9.2? I've lost my cable connection for downloading humongous files

Hickory,

Open up kmix ...... and try adjusting the mixer settings..... it's a common thing to have to reset the mixer settings (it's probably turned off). My guess is on an older system like that, the sound card has been found and that the mixer settings are just muted.
