Onboard Raid Vs PCI Raid ? Any Differences ?

Hello Im currently running one hell of a workhorse as far as Hard drives go. Ive got 9 IDE hd's running off IDE, Onboard Raid and PCI Raid cards.

Now does anyone have an information about onboard raid being more efficent(cpu ussage or throughput) then pci raid cards ? I currently have the Soyo Dragon Platnium Board w/ onboard raid and running with 2 addin pci Raid cards.

I'd like to switch to all PCI raid cards except the boot drive which would be running off an IDE. Would be much easier for cable organization.

Generally there isn't much of a difference, unless your mobo uses some config like Intel's 875/865 chipsets SATA implementation where it's a direct 150MB/s connection to the northbridge. If I'm not mistaken, the IDE bus bandwidth is shared with the PCI slots, but I can remember a diagram I saw some time ago where the IDE and PCI pipes were seperate.

Looks like I'm the one that needs questions answered...

onboard is much faster than pci the processor get to it qwiker
so in a sence i guess u could say pci raid is for wieners
