UPS recommendations

I'm looking for an inexpensive Uninterruptible Power Supply for home office that offers modem protection as well.

I was reading in my Network+ book that surge protectors basically suck. And that line conditioners are a much better choice. A UPS is a "natural" line conditioner because the AC power never crosses over the battery charger to the the computer components.

Can anyone recommend a specific model and approximate price?

I like APC

The XS 1000 UPS goes for around $150 and can be found at many stores like CompUSA, CircuitCity, BestBuy, Etc...

I personaly got the RS 1500 UPS (which is almost the same but has LAN protection too)

The RS and XS are almost the same... RS a lil more expensive tho.

I got my RS 1500 from Dell.com for 200 (or so) shipped... so the price of the RS can be the same if you find the right deals and coupons

there are so many good ones.
my preferance has always been APC's
I have several diffeant ones from 550va to 1100 va
and they do a very good job.
just look at newegg.com for prices.
but you might wnt to pick one up locally as they are rather heavy.
make sure you get one that is more than you really need and it will give you more run time when ouwer is off.

and never connect a laser printer in to it.

I used to own APC, they are good. I switch to Belkin for their AVR.

I would recommend a Belkin 800va UPS w/ AVR. Automatic Voltage Regulation. I own two and will buy more when they go on sale. You can get them for around $80 on sale and sometimes for about $50 amir.

I think I'll go with the Belkin 800VA when it goes on sale. If you remember let me know when this happens. Thanks!
