Kids NEED HELP/w L.E.D's

i pulled apart an old VCR board and ended up getting a whole bunch of LED's of different colors. Some were yellow, others were green and there were also a few red ones. But i also found one purple (it was the only one that was 5mm, the rest were 3mm) LED and two black ones. The black LEDs had sort of a "jacket" around them, while the purple didn't. The black and the purple LEDs didn't emit any light even though they let the current thru...
i was wondering if the
purple was a UV LED and the black was emitting some shade of red that human eye can't see....
i hope that someone who knows alot about LEDs can explain what those LEDs are....

The "black" ones are probably infra-red (IR) emitters. You'll need to have the receiver to do much of any thing with them. It should have been somewhere near them on the board
