bytecc external HDD enclosure

does any one have this external enclosure http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pa=1&section=1

i just got one for and extra maxtor 40 gb hdd i have laying around. to give my father i was wondering how you have it set up . i have tried the HDD in master and slave and still can not get it to show up in the MY COMPUTER it is in device manager as a USB2 mass storage device and is said to be working properly but it does not show as a removable hdd or disk 2 or at all in MY COMPUTER. i have another external hdd that is set as master and is made by bytecc , but just a different model and it did not require any drivers and it shows up in MY COMPUTER as disk 2 . this one says it does not require drivers for win xp witch is what i have. so any help is much appreaciated.

I just ordered a coolmax Saturday, and should be delivered here today. I vacillated back and forth between the Bytecc and the Coolmax for two days, and read everything I could find...reviews etc. Seems like the Bytecc is a good enclosure..and I did not read of any failures.

I really don't have a clue what your problem could be..obviously you have USB enabled...maybe try a different USB cable?... check the onboard PSU to see that it is working properly..be very sure the IDE cable is seated good...one of the enclosures I checked out while making up my mind said the hard drive was offset in the enclosure which pulled at the IDE connector ribbon cable.

Mine came in today, coolmax enclosure and a 40 gb Maxtor. I just connected everything and the machine (win98se) detected it and wanted the drivers..put the CD in and pointed the wizard to the CD drive..installed without a hitch..then the system detected the hard drive and set that up..but where?...like you, I cannot see the drive anywhere. Maybe it must be formatted first?.. like you, I have other hard drives here..older bootable drives with an OS on them..I will try one of those to see if I can access a different drive.

Well, one thing comes to mind as a possibility (maybe). I am using the onboard USB legacy connector, which is USB V1.1. This enclosure plainly says, "IDE to USB V2.0"... maybe the setup will not work properly when using USB V1.1...?
