Systems just put in some new hardware, wont start up

today i got an amd athlon xp 2500+ cpu, a shuttle an35-n-ultra motherboard (nforce2), a stick of corsair 256mb pc 3200 400Mhz memory, two round ide cables and one round floppy controller.

i already have two hard drives, a cd rom and a cd-rw, along with a case and PSU. there used to be a P3 866Mhz processor and an abit motherboard. on the motherboard was a Geforce FX 5200 128MB video card, sound blaster live!, and a 10/100 ethernet card. so i just switched the CPU, mobo, the ram, and the cables.

i am running win2k. when i boot up i get past the first sequence of tests, but then when i get to the actual start screen, then comes the problem. i get the following message:

*** STOP : 0x0000007b (0xED41B84C, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

If this is the first time you've seen the Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check you hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart you computer.

Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors.

Thats the end of that message. I've tried to boot in safe-mode, but no luck either. Any suggestions? did i put the little connectors at the bottom of the mobo in the wrong place? its probably some wire that isnt plugged to the right spot. i have checked both of the IDE cables and are in spots one and two, one for primary and slave hard drives, and the second for the cd-rom and cd-rw. i can check the jumpers on the drives too. but mainly, what does the error message mean and why does it continually come up reboot after reboot?

ahhhh....you cant just switch out massive amounts of hardware like that without a rebuild of windows....you COULD with Win98 if you knew how...but it usually is a no-go with XP or Win2k..

but..all is not lost...you should be able to do a 'repair" installation....I THINK you can do that with Win2000, not sure....with XP you boot from the cd and let the install start and it will search your hard drive and find you current windows install and it'll ask if you want to "repair" that install.

So try that....just dont do anything related to formatting.

If win2000 WONT do that...what you might have to do is take a different hard drive, install win2000 on it...THEN take the old hard drives and put em in as slaves or on the secondaty or whatever...to get any needed data off of them.

Its giving you those stop messages etc because it is detecting massive conflicts in the new hardware and the old settings for the old hardware etc....so try the "repair install" as I described.

Oh, yeah, just reformat then....easy solution....msoft recommends a rebuild when you change motherboards..sometimes the repair thing helps but usually the format option is best.

From what I know when you upgrade a new motherboard, it's like starting again from scratch ,cause the hard drive will have difficulty recognizing the new mobo on its old format.

I agree that you should reformat, possibly even re-partition your drive. Then re-install Windows2K.

hOPE THAT HELPED

no need for the format i just did a reinstall. made the ownership of the computer different and didnt lose any files.... so i'm lucky, probably should have uninstalled ALL of the drivers first right?
