K7SEM help

Hello, I bought a K7SEM mainboard and a processor (sales person said they would work with each). Then I bought a new computer case with an 400 watt ATX power supply. These were all brand new. I had them hook up everything so all I had to do was install the OS. I installed windows XP Professional and ran that for a while, every so often it will freeze (sometimes in a game) and you will have to reset the computer to be able to do anything. I recently tried installing Linux RedHat 8.0 and it froze on the second installation CD.

What is the problem?
thanks

Welcome to the forum!

Could it be heat related? When it locks up...if you reset it and go right back to the game will it lock up again right away? If so it could be heat related......let it run a while and look in the bios and see what the cpu temp is etc.

Is it only happening while playing games?

Did you get all the latest drivers and bios and windows updates?

I have no clue anything about linux, sorry, lol.

It's POSSIBLE that it is locking up simply cuz it is onboard video...for instance some onboard video will NOT play some games.

That won't give you a lockup.

Prime suspects: RAM. Cooling. First stop: www.memtest86.com

No, it does not lock up just durring games, for instance, if you turn the power button to the monitor off and walk away, then come back later it will not respond untill you reset it. Other times all i will have running in WInamp (a mp3 playing program) and AIM running and it will just freeze. It had 256 Meg of SDRAM memory in it. I have also tried the onboard video port as well as a AGP 32 Meg graphics card. I think the card is a Nvidia card. I have had the bios updated also.

I'm not talking to you until you've run the RAM test from the site I gave you the link for This is one of the few proper RAM tests among the many placebos.
