icons on desktop

I had my XP in for repairs and when it came back everything was gone. I did have backups of the items I needed but I wonder if anyone can tell me how to put icons such as Techimo, My Documents ,etc on the desktop page.

In general just right click the item and do "send to" and choose "desktop" (create shortcut)

You could also paste shortcuts to the needed items in the C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\desktop folder. Or if for all users, paste into C:\Documents and Settings\all users\desktop folder.

are you sure they're gone or just hidden?

Dun-dun-dun!!

Yeah you could fuss with the registry (don't ask I'm running 2000 at the moment) but - if you name a file a certain name it will create a link to the My Documents folder or whatever. I can't think of a link which provides those names though.

Im on a 98 machine right now so I cant remember exactly how to find it..but the hide icons thing is somewhere under "customize desktop"

yea, i use the hide icons all the time to clean my desktop up for visitors (people yell when they see 50 or so icons.... then i just toss them in a folder on my desktop called "random")

in xp, right click desktop, click arrange icons, and make sure "show icons" is checked
