Linking my home computers

I have cable modem going into a router next door. It then comes to my house into switch. Out of the switch I am running my Win98 desktop and my Win2000 laptop. I would like to share the printer on my desktop with my laptop. I am having a problem getting them networked and linking to each other. I dont want my neighbors computer being part of the network, he is hooked into the router for internet access.

Is this possible? Do I need to get different cables and just direct connect my 2 computers?

Thank you for your time.

I live in half of my brothers house, the cable company is the ones who hooked everything up. Since this is a 1 family home they allow this. Sorry for the confusion and not being more specific.

welcome to techimo.

ummm, you do realize that what you are doing is a little unethical, don't you? residential broadband access packages are't really meant to be shared across households.

Well, if you put both of your computers in their own workgroup (right click on my computer, computer name, hit the button that says "Change"), you should be able to share resources. As far as having it so your nieghbor cant access them... well thats slightly more difficult. You could password protect your shares, or you could install a software firewall like Zone Alarm. With zone alarm just add your computers to the "trusted zone" and it should allow them to access each other's resources, while blocking out any other computers.
