more mandrake newb questions

Got done updating from mandrake 9.1 to 9.2 and I have a few more questions

I'm trying to set it up so I can view shared resources on my dads computer which is running windows XP pro

I used the RPM installer to install the samba-client package as well as a few other samba packages that were there (when i searched for "samba"). Nehow, I went to start--> configuration --> networking --> samba configuration to try and setup the workgroup and stuff that some documentation I read said to do. It opens up a web browser and gives me this error

"An error occured while loading http://localhost:901/:

Could not connect to host localhost (port 901)"

Anyone know why this might be happening?

Its trying to use SWAT. Make sure it's enabled.
Go to /etc/xinetd.d/ and open the file called swat.
There should be a line that says disable=yes. Change the yes to a no and restart xinetd.

When I tried to save that file after editing it gave me an error that I did not have write permissions (while logged in as my user). Is there any way I can configure files like this without having to log out of my user and then log into KDE as root?

On a side note, after changing it to disable=no It allowed me to enter the configuration, but all that was there was a list of documentation. For some reason I remember reading in the mandrake documentation that there was a Samba wizard you could run. Any idea where this might be?

Thx for putting up with my ignorance,
Andrew

You SWAT page doesn't have the links at the top like in the screen shot I attached?
I'm not sure about a samba wizard in Mandrake since the last version I used was 8.something and I have long since forgotten everything about it.

It only had home/status/view/password, but I figured out that I needed to log in with root to view the other icons

To edit files outside your home directory, just (in a console) type "su"
It will prompt you for the root password and then you will be awarded the # shell.
then you can use nano or vim or whatever to open the files. You could probably load a GUI text editor as well.
Also I beleive KDE has an option to start konqueror in "Super-User mode" so you can do this sort of thing.

vhockey86,

is your dad's win xp on a home network already? on my setup I just go to start > networking > lin neighborhood and mount the "home" network. Then mount the shared pc or folders that you want to share.

His is already configured for a home network, I can access his files fine through win xp.

I managed to get the workgroup and stuff changed and now I can see his computer, but the things shared on that computer dont appear, only the "c$" admin kinda shares and the printer

I should probably start a new thread for this, but could anyone walk me through setting up an ftp server? Ive been messing around with the setttings for proftpd through the webadmin thing, but I cant seem to setup users and their default diretories (when I connect to the ftp I just get blank, no files or anything), and also I cant seem to get the connection to pass through my router even though port 21 is forwarded to the PC.
