Kids HELP! Router questions

Ok my question is will a router with 3 computers, a 5 port hub with 2 connections to it (an Xbox and a Linux PC). Will the router slow my DSL connection down? I ran a speed test with Cnet's meter n it gets an average of 450 kbps. Is this slow for a ADSL line? I am also contemplating getting cable service instead. Thank you and some one PLEASE help!!!!!! :-D

the router itself shouldn't slow down your connection any, but by adding more devices to a single connection you will be splitting bandwidth between the different machines of course. as for the speed that sounds pretty normal to me.

to find out a little more how your connection is tho, go to www.dslreports.com

with a switching hub each device will have the full bandwidth when it is connected
that is the whole purpose of useing a switch instead of a hub

the router will not slow down, and if it does its a very small amount.

your connection in general goes through many routers all ready i dont think one more will hurt (unless its defective!)

I connect at 1.3 Mbps with five computers online and never see a slow down. What router do you have and who is your ISP. How far from the switching station ??

Its a *REFURBISHED* Dlink DI-604 from TigerDirect.com. I have Speakeasy (www.speakeasy.net) as my ISP. I dont know how far I am from the switching station, but how could I find that out?

and to Baileys comment:

I do have a 3com hub connected to the router which has 3 devices connected to it....could this potentially be the problem?

a hub is slightly slower than a switch in some situations..but with only 3 comps on it, I DOUBT youd see a real difference....unless they were all 3 doing heavy downloads at the same time etc.

a switch is a little smarter than a hub, so a switch keep the data from "colliding"..with a hub its more of a first come first serve deal and sometimes two comps try to "talk" on the line at once at the "collide" so they have to both stop and retransmit the data..but with only 3 comps....its probably not even going to be noticeable.

John Prophet is correct on a very small network as you have, you wouldnt really notice a decrease in preformance
