No boot record found

I have been working on my grandfathers pc for the last couple days now. It an older P2 300 with windows 98. Well it has had problems booting up. I looked at it at his house with no luck. so I told him I would have to take it home to really take a look at it. So I did. What was weird was right when I hooked it up at my house it booted up fine. So I shut it down for a couple days and tried to boot up again just to see. Now no boot. Telling me Searching for boot record Cd -rom ,floppy,IDE etc Not Found. Well he doesnt have any Windows disc so a complete reinstall is not an option. Unless I buy one .I even tried using a boot disc disk with no luck. I am able to access the bios. Any suggestions.

is the hard drive showing up?

Youve got a w98 boot floppy?

boot to the floppy and run "fdisk /mbr" (just for the heck of it)

but it sound slike it aint seeing the hard drive now....see of you boot to the floppy and run "fdisk" see if it says "no fixed disk present" (dont change anything with fdisk, just use it to see if it finds the hard drive)

It detects it has a HD in the bios. He had a Recovery boot disk and I also got one off of a boot disk site. NOt sure if I used the right one since it had a couple ones to choose from for W98. He doesnt have the original W98 boot disk if that what your asking
